Respiratory system of man

Humans have a sophisticated respiratory system that facilitates the exchange of gases, mostly oxygen and carbon dioxide, between the body and its surroundings. It is made up of a number of organs and structures that cooperate to provide healthy gas exchange and breathing. The main elements of the human respiratory system are summarized as follows

The nasal cavity and nose:

Through the nostrils, or nares, air enters the respiratory system.
Mucous membranes and tiny, hair-like structures called cilia border the nasal cavity and aid in filtering, heating, and humidifying the air.

Pharynx:

Food and air both commonly flow through the throat, or pharynx.
It joins the larynx to the mouth and nasal cavities.

Larynx:

The vocal cords are located in the larynx, also known as the voice box, which is used to produce speech.
It is also essential in keeping food particles and other foreign items out of the trachea.

Trachea:

The windpipe, also known as the trachea, is a stiff tube made of cartilage rings.
It transports air to the bronchi from the larynx.

Bronchi:

Two bronchi, one directing to each lung, split off from the trachea.
The bronchi further split into smaller bronchioles inside the lungs.
Bronchioles:

The tiny, delicate tubes called bronchioles carry air to the alveoli.

Alveoli:

At the end of the bronchioles are little, air-filled sacs called alveoli.
In the alveoli, where carbon dioxide is expelled and oxygen is absorbed by the blood, gas exchange takes place.

Lungs:

The respiratory system’s primary organs are the lungs.
They are separated into lobes, with two lobes in the left lung and three in the right.

Each lung has a thin membrane called the pleura that aids in lung expansion and contraction.
